December 23, 2015

Dear Neighbors:

It is hard to believe that Christmas is just two days away.

It’s harder to believe that, the next time I sit down to write my weekly letter to you, it will be 2016.

Even as we race (in reindeer-pulled sleds, perhaps?) towards the finish line of this year’s holiday season, we remain ever-mindful of those in need. At my Annual Ward 4 Holiday Party, with your help, we donated over 400 coats to Ward 4 students. That is a truly incredible amount; neighbors, you help to remind me daily of just how blessed I am to have the opportunity to serve and represent this community. I am so thoroughly impressed — let’s promise to always be willing to lend a hand to a neighbor in need, even after the holiday season comes to a close.

If we can do just that – and remember to always love thy neighbor – we will be doing our part, here in Ward 4, in getting closer to bringing about that ever-elusive goal of world peace.

Friends, please have a warm, cheer-filled, and all-around amazing holiday. Remember to keep safety first; please keep the doors to your car and home locked, and remember to turn off any kitchen appliances after you finish using them.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly; don’t forget to leave out cookies and milk for Santa!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Brandon T. Todd
Councilmember, Ward 4
#Ward4Proud

Legislative Update

Councilmember Todd Attends Hearing on Walter Reed Redevelopment

On Thursday, December 17th, Councilmember Todd attended a Committee of the Whole hearing on bill 21-474, the “Walter Reed Development Omnibus Act of 2015.”  In November, Mayor Bowser sent this much-anticipated bill to the Council.  This legislation will move forward the development of the Walter Reed campus and allow the District to acquire 66.57 acres of land from the U.S. Army.  Once the property is acquired, the District will execute a ground lease for 3.1 million square feet of development, which will include: 2,100 residential units, two charter schools, a town center which will include a large grocer, neighborhood serving retail, housing and services for seniors and homeless veterans, and a non-emergency ambulatory care clinic.   During the hearing, Councilmember Todd and his colleagues heard testimony from the developer, community members, and non-profit organizations about how the development of the Walter Reed campus will benefit both the Ward 4 community and the District of Columbia; and will bring an economic boon to the upper Georgia Avenue corridor.  Councilmember Todd is committed to moving this legislation swiftly through the Council to ensure that this project continues to progress forward.

For more information, please contact the Councilmember’s Legislative Director, Michele Blackwell, at MBlackwell@dccouncil.us or (202) 724-7774.

What’s New: In and Around Ward 4

The Ward 4 Holiday Party is a Hit!

The Ward 4 Holiday Party and New Coat Drive was, by every measure, a total success! The food was delicious, the band played at full volume, and hundreds of members of the Ward 4 community came together for one night of goodwill, cheer, and spectacular fun.
Together, with your help, we were able to collect over 400 coats to be donated to students in need! Ward 4, your actions truly embody the holiday spirit — The Councilmember is so proud, honored, and simply blown away by the opportunity he has to serve you and this amazing community.

Councilmember Todd and the Ward 4 Office would like to extend a huge “Thank You!” to everyone who came  together to make this incredible event happen: St. John’s College High School, Mayor Bowser, the Party Planning Committee, the vendors, the hardest-working volunteers around, and every single person who was able to attend. Thank you for making this party and coat drive amazing.
At the party, Councilmember Todd presented every ANC Commissioner and Civic leader with a certificate of appreciation thanking them for their community-driven efforts and leadership. If you haven’t already, make sure you take the time to thank your ANC Comissioner for his or her work! You can find a list of all Ward 4 Commissioners here.

If you weren’t able to attend the party — don’t worry! We have a full Facebook album with all of the pictures from the event available for viewing here.

Coat Giveaway at Trinity Episcopal Church

On Tuesday, Councilmember Brandon Todd, his staff, and a countless number of amazing volunteers to help distribute the over-400 coats that were donated for Ward 4 students in need at the Annual Ward 4 Holiday Party.

It was amazing to see so many people lending a hand to a neighbor in need — it is this kind of holiday spirit that makes it easy for Councilmember Todd to be #Ward4Proud! The Councilmember hopes these coats are able to make a difference to his youngest Ward 4 residents this winter.

Councilmember Todd Meets with the D.C. National Guard

Last week, Councilmember Todd joined a few members of the D.C. National Guard, including Major General Errol Schwartz (pictured with the Councilmember, above), to participate in a flyover in the ESGR Bosslift across the District and over Ward 4. While with the Guard, the Councilmember signed a “Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve,” which outlined and recognized his continued support for our country’s Service members.

Public safety has long remained one of Councilmember Todd’s top priorities as an elected official. After this flyover with the D.C. National Guard, he has now completed ride-alongs with them, 4th District Commander Wil Manlapaz, and FEMS.

The Councilmember continues to build and maintain strong relationships with the men and women who keep our Ward safe — they are always just a phone call away.

Councilmember Todd and Mayor Bowser Join Hattie Holmes for their Holiday Celebration

Last week, Councilmember Todd and Mayor Bowser joined Hattie Holmes Senior Wellness Center to help them celebrate their winter holiday party. Nobody in Ward 4 throws a party like our seniors — the Councilmember had an amazing time catching up with his friends at the Wellness Center.

Since taking office, Councilmember Todd has ensured that the needs and concerns of seniors remain a top priority. He believes that our seniors are the backbone of Ward 4 and the District, and fights every day for their rights to age-in-place, be treated with respect and dignity, and continue to thrive and contribute to the community.
